One less key on my chainJuly 7, 2010 M(Fairfield: CA USA) We purchased this to replace an old keylock on a newer foreclosed home (only one key came with the house; realtor recommended we change the locks) and it is perfect. Sure, it makes noise, it's electronic after all! But that noise tells us one of two things: someone has left the house or someone is entering. If you are very sensitive to noise, especially while sleeping, you may want to view one on display at one of the major hardware stores before deciding to install.
Installation was simple; took less than an hour for my husband to swap it with the old lock and knob. We made a trip to a local store to check out the device, but we ordered from Amazon because the price was considerably lower, customer service better, and the local store did not have the color we wanted (nor did they know it came in the darker color.) We paired the lock with a matching latch-type door handle with a standard knob on the back. We did need to adjust the bolt hole, but it was a simple matter of a tiny adjustment to the bolt plate.
It's a typical deadbolt; you have to throw it before opening the door, but it moves very smoothly and cleanly. If the lock button is not engaged upon closing the door, the lock automatically engages for you; great for households with forgetful people or when carrying in packages. Everyone in the house knows the code, so no one is locked out if they forget a key; in fact, only one of us carries a key, the rest just use the code.
The style is attractive, unobtrusive, though there is a light that flashes to let you know if the lock is engaged. This is comforting to me, may be bothersome to some, but here's the deal: you can turn that off, as well as the keypad beeps, though I prefer to hear when someone is coming in. There is also a feature that allows you to disengage the lock altogether or change the length of time before the lock self-engages; we have ours set at 30 seconds (the kids take that as a challenge when getting the mail or the paper; will they make it back before the lock locks?).
I'd recommend this to anyone who needs the safety of a sturdy lock, has multiple residents, and doesn't care to mess around with having extra keys made (or having to change locks every time keys are lost.) Oh, and if the door isn't closed properly, the lock lets you know that, too.
Love this lockMay 23, 2010 Kim 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The lock does exactly what it is designed to do. Installation was extremely easy as was programming. I have 5 children who "forget" to lock the door and lose keys constantly. This is great. I always know the door is locked and there are no more lost keys. Someone mentioned it being loud. There is a loud beeping when the keys are pressed but it can be turned off. The actual sound of the door locking isn't THAT loud. We got used to it pretty quickly. Everyone who has come to our house asks about it when they realize the door just locked itself and they love it. There are only two "cons" that I can think of. First is the 5 digit keypad instead of ten. I wish it would have had ten. Also I don't like the idea of my children's friends looking over their shoulder and knowing the code. This would be the case with any keypad lock though. I think the automatic locking feature is what makes this one stand out.
Easy install, works greatMay 10, 2010 K. Mehling(NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This door lock mechanism was being installed into an existing door that did not have a deadbolt so it required cutting the 2 1/8" hole for the door, 1" for the deadbolt and stricker plate. The instructions were easy and clear and the installation was a breeze after drilling the required holes. It was easy to program and has been working great for a week.
We have a detached garage so it's nice to be able to leave the keys in the car and use this to lock/unlock the deadbolt to the house. The finish I thought looked very nice, yes the interior cover is plastic, but unless you touch it, I don't think you could tell from a distance. Rekying with a physical Kwikset key was a cinch.
Kwikset 909 ReviewApril 15, 2010 Thomas Holik 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Have installed one of these on every entrance door on the house and backyard cottage. It's so nice not having to carry keys (or forgetting keys) and still be able to get into house/cottage. I do not know how many times I have walked to back cottage to get something only to realize I did not have a key. Now, it is no longer a problem. The fact these units have the "universal' key feature also means that I can key them myself and only need to carry around one key as a backup. Great product. I read a review in which one person stated these are loud? So what!? They really are not that loud and they are noisy for 1~2 seconds while it is locking or unlocking. What's the big deal. Just don't put them on your bedroom door!
Kwikset 909 Smart Code DeadboltFebruary 25, 2010 David W. Cason(Huntsville, AL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Nice product - good features and works great. Easy installation and nice not to have another key on the key ring. Had a hardware problem with the touchpad (9/0 key would not push in). Called Kwikset tech support and had a replacement item shipped to me within a week.
